FAUX FOX
Evolving from the late-'90s North Texas art-rock movement, Faux Fox, formed in early 2001, had a fascination with fashion, glamour, cinema, pop art, and the avant-garde, which separated the band from their contemporaries. Dressed in bizarre, stylish costumes, the group played a defiantly experimental variation of electro, which vacillated between avant-rock and sleek pop hooks.
During the early 2000's, the group was driven by the creative tension between singer George Quartz and synth player M, who each pulled the band in separate directions: Quartz had a fondness for seventies glam rock and schmaltzy Vegas exhibitionism, while M was intrigued by minimalist experimentalism inspired by Suicide and My Bloody Valentine. This early incarnation of Faux Fox was completed by a second synth player, Julius Preston, whose epic tendencies would further manifest after M's departure and the release of 2003's Black Glove or White Glove.Songwriting and electronic programming were then split between Quartz, Preston, and new drummer/multi-instrumentalist Wesley Crusher. After the addition of bassist Ryan Williams, the layered sound began to take on a more opulent and decidedly grandiose feel with Cusp of the Precipice, released in 2004. This direction developed further as Edward Setina replaced Williams on bass and shared in the writing duties on the 2006 EP, Endless Pursuit.Faux Fox currently call Dirt City (Dallas – Fort Worth – Denton), Texas their home, and are finishing up their latest recording, All That Remains, due to be released by the Australian label, EXO Records, in the coming months.
